Art(net)works created from images of inner-Sydney social housing precincts - #intheдуьне
#intheдуьне is a series of art(net)works created from images of inner-Sydney social housing precincts.
After amassing thousands of pictures in and around the community housing blocks of Redfern, Waterloo and Surry Hills, I created a series of works that aim to capture the euphoria of being connected to the world via complex and undiscovered spaces.
It’s a New Aesthetic project for Sydney, one that will attempt to entice and challenge people who would not otherwise see the beauty or worldliness within these expanses.
Much of the work is inspired by the fusion of beauty and tragedy captured in Eastern Bloc themed photography blogs, as well as various online representations of hybrid cultures and ethnicities. This research strengthened the global lens from which I continuously perceived the local surrounds.
The project is my way of participating with a community of people who are using new media to communicate how global identity influences their perspectives.
дуьне is the Chechen word for world. It derives from the Arabic word دُنْيا (Dunyā). It was chosen to represent the universality and hybridity of the spaces explored in the project.
